At Junk N Dump, we accept all rubbish and recycling to make your recycling as easy as possible. If you want to combine that with curbside recycling, then here is a list of what is not accepted by Wellington’s curbside collection.
Why You Should Separate Non-Accepted Rubbish And Recycling Items
It is important that you don’t put non-accepted items into your recycling and hope it gets sorted out by “someone at the other end”. In fact, what happens is that your entire load goes to the landfill! So separating out the non-accepted items, such as a used nappy or food waste, for Junk N Dump to collect has a big environmental impact.
Junk N Dump will take non-accepted-curbside items to recyclers who do accept these items or to refurbishers for reuse or donation. Then the bare minimum is taken to the landfill.

Reasons Why Wellington Curbside Recycling Rejects Items
- Aerosol cans: They are pressurised, and the council doesn’t have facilities to handle volatile items.
- Metal jar lids: Some can be too tiny for the recycling machines and will be incorrectly sorted into the wrong pile.
- Plastic shopping bags: They sometimes jam the council’s recycling-sorting machines.
- Tetra Pak cartons: They are multi-layered with different materials, e.g. paper, plastic and aluminium. Specialist recyclers can split the carton into individual materials, and some recyclers re-use the cartons to make new products.
- Household batteries: The internal chemicals require specialised disposal. These chemicals can be the catalysts of fires in ill-prepared recycling depots.
- Glassware: The category of glass that is utilised for tumblers, dinnerware, mirrors and luminaires does not melt at the same temperature as glass in jars and bottles. If glassware is mixed into new recycled glass items, it could result in a weaker product. Glass is also a high-risk item to handle manually.
- Polystyrene foam trays: They absorb raw meat or food juices and become bacteria nightmares.
- Takeaway coffee cups: The old-style takeaway cups have a wax coating lining. Change coffee shops if your brew is served in a wax-coated cup. Fully recyclable cups should be used, or carry a collapsible, reusable cup with you. And a handkerchief for your moustache and beard defoaming.
